I got in touch with the former creative director at LJN Toys. He was one of only two people Acclaim kept from LJN; the other was Jack Friedman's driver, who then became the president of Acclaim's driver. Let's see if he has any answers.

I don't understand the "could" part of this quote. It suggests that this is only a hypothetical occurrence, which is clearly not true.

My apologies. The original quote was indeed "can"... not "could".

Did someone actually say that? I mean, I once wrote something like that in an article about Acclaim, but I wasn't quoting anybody.

I don't have the exact quote, but yes... something amongst those lines. I'll hunt the source.

WHICH WILL BE IN ENGLISH.

FUCK. I can't this damn quote anywhere. Good thing I caught this before I started writing my short Acclaim/LJN piece.

I'm wondering if I got a quote from an Atari exec mistaken for one from an Acclaim execu.

(Note to self: BOOKMARK ALL SOURCES, EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU'LL EVER USE THEM)

I think it was Atari (around the time they fucked up with E.T.), but the only quotes I could find were indirect, e.g.:

http://arstechnica.com/hardware/news/2007/08/a-history-of-the-amiga-part-2.ars

"Marketing executives at Atari bragged that they could >>shit in a box and sell it.<<"

You know, I've always been able to differentiate between Atari an Acclaim despite similar underhanded philosophies.... I'm ashamed of myself for getting this one mixed up.

And no, it wasn't Frank's unfinished book that got me muddled. I haven't read it in years, and barely remember that quote.

Very. Very. Ashamed of myself.

BTW Frank, I'm doing a short article for one of those shitty e-article sites out of one of my partner's request, do you mind if I take site your work (if needed)? No this isn't another LAUGHING OUT LOUD ACCLAIM SUX RAINBOW OF DOOM piece that everyone and their mom has already done.

A disgruntled Atlus staffer named "Hidemushi" left a hidden message in a Famicom game called Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken. She supposedly programmed the bonus stages on Karate Kid.

I requested a friend of mine translate it for us.

You can thank gocha for it :)
Quote:
Note: This is a really rough translation.
There are more/less expressions from original Japanese sentences. Since,
1. The original script is so colloquial. Many words are omitted.
2. My English (translation) skill is not so good.
Especially I don't know insulting words much :P
So consider it as a sort of (poor) free translation.

Hey, what a nostalgic music.
It reminds me those good old days.

All guys were working as a professional.
.....
On the contrary, this time,
they were so terrible.

Finally, it's done.
Everything now becomes good memories, eh?
Damn,
I must thank them here.

First,
Ogura Kaoru
who eloped with a man.
You, bitch.

Don't come to the office
after you had sex 6 times last night,
without taking a shower.

Next,
Ohmachi Tatsuya
You, bastard.
Don't work with slovenly smile.

You were late on the ROM release day (i.e. finishing day?)
as if nothing had happened.
I don't forgive you even though you gave me a pornbook.

You gain weight more and more.
That's why you can only kiss though you paid 18,000 yen.

A debugger belongs to Namco,
Takano Kenji
Don't complain to our plan in spite of a parttimer.

And,
Gotoh Kiyoharu
who stood in our way the most.
You, bastard.

If a time-machine were invented,
I'll send you to Edo period first of all.
Play at riddles there.

Sigh, I calm down.....

you think I do really? NO
Gotoh Kiyoharu
You asshole,
geez, disappear from the world.

----

Apart from that, there are people who helped me.

Mr. Okada, who took a big bite.
I know your abnormal sexual orientation.

Mr. Yamagishi, who refrained from going to the soapland
until the finish. (note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soapland)
Please enjoy it to your heart's content (as much as you want).

You refrained from going to the soapland.

Mr. Iwata, who joined us halfway and worked hard.
Sorry for yelling at you.
Keep your good job from now on.

Fujimura and Udopyu,
I think you worked the hardest in this project.
Thank you very much.
Who we should blame is Gotoh.

Takayama, Kudoh, Suzuki, Makkii, Kaneko, Aihara,
my lovely angels Sato-chan and Iga-kun.

Thank you
......
everybody.

Yoko-G,
Thank you very much for your job.
I offer this game to your wife's birthday.

Kazumushi, sorry to come home rarely.
I love you, for a long time. --Hidemushi

Wow.

I wonder if any of them know about this. Imagine finding about it so many years later.

I guess the person who posted on 2ch about the message was a colleague of Hidemushi and was told about it by him. It's not clear if this person worked with Hidemushi on this game.

I thought the Japanese were supposed to be a clean people.
That's just naaaaaaaaaaasty.

Japanese skanks: If you're going to have wild, kinky love hotel sex six times in one night (Even just once or twice!), please bathe your cooch. Yes, the entire office CAN smell it.

I'll never look at the fly-catching bonus game the same way again...

EDIT: Thank you Gocha, for giving me an excuse to preach on feminine hygiene. Post-nookie crotch is by far one of my lease favorite stinks.

Erika looked like a fairly cutesy game from what I played of it. Funny that it contains such a foul message hidden. I wonder what Gotoh Kiyoharu did to earn so much hatred?

Haha, this is the coolest NES-related thing I've read about in years. It's so long for a hidden message. He really goes off. It is kind of menacing in a way because of its permanence, some 21 years after the fact I am reading about this guy's workplace drudgery and hatred for his coworkers. I like the music ripped from another game and the song change when it becomes a little more positive, really shows the effort the guy went through.

How hidden was this? Was it triggered thru some obscure event in the game or did someone just dig thru the code when they were alerted to its presence? I hope someone knows of similar hidden shit like this, very entertaining. Really puts the programmers' room from FF4 to shame.

It's a very complicated code. Kevin Gifford has put up a better translation and a better explanation on his website.

The more I think of it, I think my favorite part is what I assume to be an image of the man that created the message on top, complete with badass shades.
