Returning to the topic, it's very possible that Hello Kitty World was originally just going to be Balloon Kid for NES.

And there's also that wierd franchise swap they did with the GBC version of Pokémon Puzzle League, which still has graphics from a GBC Tetris Attack port inside the ROM, if I remember correctly.

Nintendo and Panel de Pon (SFC) Original --> Tetris Attack (SNES) Yoshi's Island --> Pokemon Puzzle League/Challenge (N64/GBC) Pokemon --> Puzzle League (GBA) Generic this time around.

I like Tetris Attack a lot. Damn you Nintendo for not bringing the Nintendo Puzzle Collection to the US for the Gamecube. I wanted my multi-player Tetris Attack.

I wonder if they had made the Kid Klown version first in case they couldn't get a franchise for it (which might be what they did with their Bugs Bunny/Mickey/Hugo/Woody Woodpecker Crazy Castle games, or even what Sunsoft did with Sunman).

Damn. I was about to mention Kemco.
Don't forget Garfield and Ghostbusters in that ball of licenses, too.

I just talked to Chris Kohler, his comprehension is that yes, the Miyamoto story is true, and that Donkey Kong was originally a Popeye game that was changed when the licensing deal didn't go through. After Donkey Kong shipped, they managed to work out a solid deal for Popeye, but Miyamoto was working on something else, so some other team handled it.

Wow. Why the hell did it take so long for this story to get out?

I just got another game that fits into this topic: Wario Blast.

It was just Bomberman GB with Wario as an added character... and the multiplayer mode removed, I think?

Die Hard Arcade seems to fit this category, gaining the license when it was released in the US.
